JOB TITLE: Clinical Processing Lead
DEPARTMENT: Clinical Laboratory

Job Summary

The Clinical Processing Lead will coordinate and perform tasks and activities in several areas of the clinical laboratory. The Clinical Processing lead may assist in assigning Processing Technicians specific areas of responsibility within the scope of their job as outlined. This position will primarily be responsible for working within the Cytology department, while also assisting Clinical Processing and Molecular Processing as needed.  The Clinical Processing lead will directly oversee the cytology processing workflow, as well as assisting with other projects designated by the Laboratory Assistant Supervisor or Clinical Laboratory Manager as needed.

Essential Job Duties

 Cytology:

  • Accessioning, labeling, and preparation of gynecological specimens.
  • Assists pathologists and cytotechnologists on hospital procedures and in-house bone marrows and keeping the staining kits supplied.
  • Process gynecological, conventional and ThinPrep specimens utilizing the ThinPrep T3000 and the ThinPrep T2000.
  • Process non-gynecological specimens utilizing direct smears, cytospins, and ThinPrep techniques.
  • Stains and coverslips Pap smears and Non-Gyn slides.
  • Maintains cytology stain line.
  • Assists in cytology equipment service and maintenance.
  • Maintains the department in a professional manner, including cleaning and restocking supplies, washing dishes and handling hazardous waste disposal.
  • Fundamentally understand and defines or identifies principles of anatomy, histology or physiology related to basic laboratory methods.
  • Complies with established departmental policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, and safety and infection control procedures.
  • Performs other related tasks as directed by the Cytology Manager or Lead.

Specimen Processing:

  • Maintains that all aspects of processing and handling of all specimens referred out (routine and esoteric) are carried out in an accurate, efficient, and timely manner
  • Researches specimen requirements for reference labs and arranges for critical specimen handling and complex transportation arrangements when needed
  • Refers to the appropriate policy and procedure manuals as necessary and communicates with reference labs for proper specimen requirements
  • Under the supervision and direction of a medical technologist performs test processing in certain areas of the clinical lab which may or may not include the following:
  • Various duties in microbiology may include routine culture setup, preparation of samples for Ova and Parasite studies, setting up MIC’s, logging patient demographics into the computer
  • Logging and distribution of patient test specimens from the processing areas in the lab to the respective test areas
  • Point of Care and waived testing, as required.
  • Keeps the Lab Assistant Supervisor informed of the malfunctioning of any lab equipment
  • Processes all laboratory test requisitions and specimens quickly, efficiently, and appropriately
  • Assists other laboratory personnel as workload permits without being requested to do so
  • Consistently determines proper priorities when organizing daily tasks and is able to adjust schedule in view of STAT’s

JOB TITLE: Clinical Processing Technician 1
DEPARTMENT: Clinical Laboratory

JOB SUMMARY

The Clinical Processing Technician will coordinate and perform tasks and activities in the Specimen Processing department of the Clinical Laboratory. Each day a certain Clinical Processing Technician will be assigned specific areas of responsibility within the scope of the job as outlined. Depending upon the area of responsibility the Clinical Processing Technician will monitor the status of the workflow of the tasks involved and shall prioritize each task, the coordinate performance of tasks by other techs and report frequently and directly to the Laboratory Assistant Supervisor about completion of tasks. While this position works primarily within the Clinical Processing department, staffing needs may require this person to assist in other areas of the Clinical Laboratory, including Phlebotomy and front desk operations.

  • Prepares laboratory test requisitions for outpatients from physician orders using laboratory information system (accessioning duties will fall under all departments).
  • Maintains competencies in phlebotomy procedures and specimen requirements
  • Helps ensure that all new phlebotomists are adequately oriented and that training is documented for the tasks required
  • Monitors integrity of patient specimen collection processes and reports any abnormalities to Lab Assistant Supervisor
  • Maintains that phlebotomy supplies are adequately stocked and that all facility areas are in proper condition with regard to equipment and cleanliness
  • Shares appropriate communication with other laboratory personnel involving difficult Venipuncture, timed specimens, tasks at hand, etc.
  • Enforces and follows all laboratory safety rules, chemical safety hazards, and reports any possible hazards to the Lab Assistant Supervisor

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION/LICENSE

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required; college degree is a plus
  • Medical Assistant Phlebotomy (MA-P) certification/license
  • Active and valid Washington State Driver’s License; acceptable driving record history with Motor Vehicle division.

JOB TITLE: Courier
DEPARTMENT: Laboratory Operations

 JOB SUMMARY 

Under the general supervision of the Courier Services Manager, this position performs non-technical laboratory tasks such as stocking of lab materials, providing courier services locally and in surrounding counties, and assisting in maintaining the overall efficiency of the lab.

Employment is contingent upon the completion and satisfactory results of a background check and drug screen as well as our vehicle insurance carrier’s approval and acceptance of your current State of Washington Motor Vehicle RecordIndividuals who have four or more minor violations/accidents in the past three years, or more than one major violation in the past five years will NOT be accepted.

Essential Job Duties

  • Performs courier services including specimen pick-up, report and client supplies delivery.
  • Reviews requisitions and specimens for completeness at the time of pick-up and interacts professionally with client office and clinical staff as appropriate to obtain any discrepant information.
  • Provides administrative support to NWP leadership team, laboratory staff and physicians as needed.
  • Assists the department with service, and maintenance of NWP vehicles.

JOB TITLE: COVID Drive-Thru Testing Specialist (Swabber)
DEPARTMENT: COVID Drive-Thru
STATUS: Non-Exempt
REPORTS TO: Molecular Lab Manager

 JOB SUMMARY 

This position requires CMA, CNA, EMT, Phlebotomist and/or RN to serve as COVID-19 testers in the Northwest Laboratory drive-through clinic. Testers will gather samples for COVID testing by performing a nasal swab on drive-through patients. Utilizes strong organizational and patient interaction skills. JOB SUMMARY

The Cytology Processing Technician will coordinate and perform tasks and activities in the Cytology department of the Clinical Laboratory. Each day a certain Cytology Processing Technician will be assigned specific areas of responsibility within the scope of the job as outlined. Depending upon the area of responsibility the Cytology Processing Technician will monitor the status of the workflow of the tasks involved and shall prioritize each task, coordinate performance of tasks by other techs and report frequently and directly to the Clinical Laboratory Manager about completion of tasks.  While this position works primarily within the Cytology department, staffing needs may require this person to assist in other areas of the Clinical Laboratory, including Clinical Specimen Processing.

Cytology:

  • Accessioning, labeling, and preparation of gynecological specimens.
  • Assists pathologists and cytotechnologists on hospital procedures and in-house bone marrows and keeping the staining kits supplied.
  • Process gynecological, conventional and ThinPrep specimens utilizing the ThinPrep T3000 and the ThinPrep T2000.
  • Process non-gynecological specimens utilizing direct smears, cytospins, and ThinPrep techniques.
  • Stains and coverslips Pap smears and Non-Gyn slides.
  • Maintains cytology stain line.
  • Assists in cytology equipment service and maintenance.
  • Maintains the department in a professional manner, including cleaning and restocking supplies, washing dishes and handling hazardous waste disposal.
  • Fundamentally understand and defines or identifies principles of anatomy, histology or physiology related to basic laboratory methods.
  • Complies with established departmental policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, and safety and infection control procedures.

Specimen Processing:

  • Maintains that all aspects of processing and handling of all specimens referred out (routine and esoteric) are carried out in an accurate, efficient, and timely manner
  • Researches specimen requirements for reference labs and arranges for critical specimen handling and complex transportation arrangements when needed
  • Refers to the appropriate policy and procedure manuals as necessary and communicates with reference labs for proper specimen requirements
  • Under the supervision and direction of a medical technologist performs test processing in certain areas of the clinical lab which may or may not include the following:
  • Various duties in microbiology may include routine culture setup, preparation of samples for Ova and Parasite studies, setting up MIC’s, logging patient demographics into the computer
  • Logging and distribution of patient test specimens from the processing areas in the lab to the respective test areas
  • Point of Care and waived testing, as required.
  • Keeps the Lab Assistant Supervisor informed of the malfunctioning of any lab equipment
  • Processes all laboratory test requisitions and specimens quickly, efficiently, and appropriately
  • Assists other laboratory personnel as workload permits without being requested to do so
  • Consistently determines proper priorities when organizing daily tasks and is able to adjust schedule in view of STAT’s

Job Summary

The Cytotechnologist accurately screens liquid base, conventional and non-gynecological slides. This position is responsible for screening and reporting cytology specimens in a timely and accurate manner.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Performs primary screening of Gynecological and Non-gynecological samples. Renders interpretation and appropriate comments in accordance with established department reporting procedures.
  • Performs Quality Control screening.
  • Maintains daily record of slides screened/hours worked at Northwest Pathology and slides screened/hours worked at any other outside employer per procedure manual.
  • Maintains open communication with department supervisor, pathologist, and co-workers to ensure optimal operation of the department.
  • Provides technical consultation for Cyto-processing technicians, assists in prep work when directed by Supervisor.
  • Maintains high level of proficiency and current knowledge through continuing education.
  • Complies with requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies.
  • Supports corporate policies and objectives, complies with quality assurance, safety, and environmental and infection control protocols.
  • Assists at intra-operative procedures using remote telepathology.

Qualifications

  • Ability to evaluate Gyn and Non-Gyn cellular material using established morphologic criteria.

JOB TITLE: Molecular Technician

Job Summary

The position performs FDA approved and non-FDA approved assays for accurate and timely resulting.  Individuals will be extracting DNA and releasing patient results tied to in-house molecular testing, in addition to the job duties detailed below. Personnel falling under this job title will be performing high complexity testing and as such are required to meet the high complexity testing personnel requirements as described in regulation 42CFR493.1489(b).

Northwest Laboratory operates on a 24/7/365 basis; the individual is required to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.  Schedule flexibility with and without advanced notice is required.

Essential Job Duties

  • Perform CT/NG and HPV testing.
  • Researches, develops, standardizes, evaluates, and modifies techniques used in the Molecular Pathology laboratory and develops new assays.
  • Verifies and inputs results.
  • Performs daily QC of results.
  • Maintains the department(s) in a professional manner, including cleaning and restocking supplies.
  • Performs routine cleaning and maintenance of equipment, supplies and assigned work area.
  • Oversees molecular validation materials and assists in writing the validation report.
  • Maintains a professional attitude and appearance at all times.
  • Organizes daily specimens and their long-term storage.
  • Assists in training new employees or co-workers in laboratory tasks.
  • Assists with other laboratory procedures and departments as needed.
  • Attends various training and meetings as needed.

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION/LICENSE

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Required to meet the high complexity testing personnel requirements as described in regulation 1489(b):
    • MD or DO with a current medical license; OR
    • Doctoral degree in clinical laboratory science, chemical, physical or
      biological science; OR
    • Master’s degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory, chemical,
      physical, or biological science; OR
    • Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory, chemical,
      physical or biological; OR
    • Associate degree in chemical, physical or biological science or medical
      laboratory or equivalent education and training (refer to
      1489(b)(2)(ii) for details on required courses and training); OR
    • Individuals performing high complexity testing on or before April 24, 1995
      with a high school diploma or equivalent with documented training may
      continue to perform testing only on those tests for which training was
      documented prior to September 1, 1997 (refer to CLIA regulation
      1489(b) for details on required training) OR
    • Individual previously qualified or could have qualified as a technologist
      under 493.1489 and CFR.493.1491 on or before February 28, 1992
  • Active and valid Washington State Driver’s License; acceptable driving record history with Motor Vehicle division.

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 1 year of experience required:
    • Laboratory or healthcare environment
    • Proficiency with computers and strong, accurate typing/data entry skills.

 KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the application of molecular techniques to clinical work.
  • Familiarity and experience with molecular laboratory tools and their maintenance.
  • Adaptability to multitask and meet daily workload demands.
  • Understanding and use of personal protective equipment and universal precautions.
  • Strong client service proclivity including client/physician needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services and evaluating client/physician satisfaction; determining the cause of errors and how to resolve issues involving technical aspects of molecular assays.
  • Understandings of arithmetic/algebra, basic anatomy, chemistry, molecular biology is beneficial.
  • Basic proficiency with PCs including use of email, internet, etc.

 JOB SUMMARY 

THIS POSITION IS ON-CALL ONLY. This is a professional position of great importance to the company and performs work of a sensitive and highly confidential nature. The transcriptionist is responsible for the daily, timely, accurate, professional typing of pathology reports and correspondence as required. The transcriptionist must coordinate with the pathologists, client service associates and other transcriptionists to ensure that reports and letters are typed properly and ready for release by the pathologists. 

Northwest operates on a 24/7/365 basis; individual is required to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Schedule flexibility with and without advanced notice is required. 

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES 

  • • Transcribe pathology reports daily. 
  • • Transcribe business letters as directed by the pathologists. 
  • • Coordinate with other transcriptionists to ensure timely, accurate reports. 
  • • Performs other duties as assigned and may also assist others to complete tasks and work assignments. 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 

  • • Medical transcription experience preferred. 
  • • Intermediate level skills in Microsoft Word. 
  • • Experience with Medical Software. 
  • • Minimum of 60 wpm. 
  • • Experience must demonstrate strong proofreading, editing, grammar and spelling skills, as well as use of on-line and printed reference material. 

QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • High School Graduate or equivalent. 
  • Medical Terminology Course(s). 
  • Familiarity with current Microsoft Word and Excel programs.
